Financial and Institutional Support

Their generosity, vision and trust in our strategy and programmes has made it possible for ICTSD to evolve from a modest project into a respected global institution, and to contribute to enhanced cooperation and to effectively enable participation of governments and thousands of stakeholders in the complex multi-level governance of trade for sustainable development. Support for ICTSD 1996-2009

ICTSD puts resources to work directly through its programmes which includes organizing policy dialogues, conducting research and analysis, and communicating with and engaging audiences. Planning and technical assistance grants towards the organization’s development have been generously provided in recent years from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of the US.

Start-up of ICTSD was made possible by an original grant from the City of Geneva for the Centre’s feasibility study, and in-kind and time contributions from its founding organizations, in particular significant support was received from IUCN and the Swiss Coalition of Development Organizations (now Alliance Sud). Through a number of high-level elected and civil service officials, the City and Canton de Genève as well as the then-denominated, Swiss Federal Office for Foreign Economic Affairs (BAWI) and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, including the Swiss Permanent Mission in Geneva, were all instrumental in ICTSD’s establishment.

Start-up funding for ICTSD was provided in 1996-1997 by a number of key donors as indicated below.

  • Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Development Cooperation Agency DANIDA
  • The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
  • Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA)
  • Government of Switzerland
