Ambassador Mia Horn Af Rantzien is Doctor of Economy from the Stockholm School of Economics. Ambassador Horn studied Social Anthropology in Stockholm University and trained at the Stockholm’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs official training program for diplomats. Also, she earned a Masters in Economic Science (Civilekonom) from the Stockholm School of Economics. In addition, she was a visiting student at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. She was awarded with the Gunnar Myrdal Prize in 1992, and received grants from the Jacob Wallenberg Foundation and from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.

As a career diplomat, Ambassador Horn occupied important leadership roles, inter alia, as Ambassador for Private Sector and Development, Director of the Swedish ABCDE-Secretariat, Deputy Director General, Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and Head of the Policy Department, Ambassador for Marine Environment, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sweden to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ambassador for the Swedish Partnership for Global Responsibility, and Director  and Principle Secretary to the Parliamentary Commission on Swedish Policy for Global Development.

Ambassador Horn is member of the following institutions: the European Commission’s European Development Report Steering Group; the World Maritime University’s Governor and Board Member (in personal capacity); the Board Member of the Nordic Africa Institute; and, Governor and Board member (in personal capacity) of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Sussex University, United Kingdom.

During her time at the WTO, she took part as Chair of the Working Party (in personal capacity) for the Accession of Belarus, as Chair ad personam of the WTO Aid for Trade Task Force, and as Chair of the Integrated Framework Steering Committee. In addition, Ambassador Horn was Member (in personal capacity) of the Advisory Board to the UNICEF Research Center in Florence, Member (in personal capacity) of the Advisory Board to the Swedish Cooperative Center, Quality Controller (in personal capacity) for the National Auditing Board on a strategy proposal for the future auditing of Swedish foreign policies, Member (in personal capacity) of the Advisory Group to the project “Global Duties and Rights: economic, social and cultural rights and extra-national obligations” at the International Council on Human Rights in Geneva, Member of the Expert Group on Development Issues (EGDI), Member of the Committee on Gender in Development Cooperation, Member (in personal capacity) of the Board of the Secretariat for Analysis of Swedish Development Cooperation, SASDA, and Member (in personal capacity) of the Reference Group on the project Population, Environment and Development, Swedish Royal Academy of Science.
