CMBD Issues Dialogue on the UN and Business in Geneva

ICTSD participated at a unique multi-stakeholder meeting, hosted by the Council for Multilateral Business Diplomacy (CMBD), to discuss the evolving policies regarding partnership with the private sector in the UN system, a role that is changing with increased recognition of the positive contributions that businesses can make in the implementation of the broad UN objectives and priorities. Business has a constructive role to play as a store of commercial knowledge and productive expertise, as a laboratory for research and development, as a partner in pursuing the successes of inclusive growth and prosperity. But business is also being challenged to measure its own performance in terms of its impact on society and to take on transformative partnerships that have social, economic and environmental impact on poverty eradication and sustainable development. Senior officials from international organizations, governments, NGOs and the private sector will share their perspectives in each of three sessions.

Trade and Sustinable Development Symposium

With the aim of generating new and innovative proposals for fostering strong multilateral regimes supportive of trade and sustainable development, ICTSD and CEBRI - Centro Brasileiro de Relações Internacionais - are convening a Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium just prior to the United Nations Conference on Sustinable Development (Rio + 20) marking the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Through the Symposium, ICTSD and CEBRI are providing a forum to generate dynamic thinking, analysis and dialogue on issues of relevance to the Rio + 20 negotiations and beyond.

This initiative flows directly from ICTSD’s primary objective - to empower stakeholders in the trade policy and sustainable development domain through providing a forum to generate innovative thinking, analysis and dialogues on the pressing issues of the day.

The Trade and Sustainable Development Symposium will be taking place on the 19th of June 2012, at the Rio Othon Palace hotel in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

World Economic Forum on East Asia 2012

Roundtable for LDCs on Best Practices in the WTO Accession Process

This event, sponsored by the Chinese government and organised by the WTO secretariat, is one of the three components of China’s LDCs and Accessions Programme, which aims to strengthen LDCs’ participation in the WTO and at assisting acceding LDCs in their accessions to the global trade body. The objectives of this event are to: share experiences and best practices in the WTO accession process; build negotiating capacity of acceding LDC governments; establish and consolidate a network of LDCs’ Chief Negotiators in the WTO accession process; and identify priorities, within an overall plan to support those LDCs still in the accession process. The KORUS FTA: A New Building Block in the Asia
