Looking Ahead – The Need for Fresh Thinking on the WTO: An Open Brainstorming with Pascal Lamy

World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) - Room A
(7bis, Avenue de la Paix, Geneva)
 17 June 2009, 17:30- 19:30

The world trading system faces multiple challenges, from pressing “new issues” to large pieces of unfinished business. The imperatives to finalize the Doha Development Agenda, to find solutions to the current crisis and to build convergence to address societal aspirations on sustainable development and on matters such as climate change or energy, are reminders of the continuous need for the system to react, adapt and evolve as the world moves on. At the same time a host of neglected areas of WTO’s “bread and butter” work represent great potential for additional welfare gains for all Members that can and should be delivered by the present system and its mechanisms.

Pascal Lamy, recently reappointed as WTO’s Director General for another four-year term, will discuss his views and visions for the future of the WTO in an open brainstorming with academics and civil society. Fresh thinking and new ideas from the audience are explicitly welcome.  The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Thomas Cottier, Managing Director of the World Trade Institute, and Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz, ICTSD’s Chief Executive.
