In early 2006 ICTSD began a series of Washington Dialogues designed to bring together Geneva-based trade negotiators and policy makers to meet with U.S. policymakers and stakeholders to debate developmental perspectives and get better acquainted with the political realities of the United States and their significance on the Doha Development Round. This year, participants from Geneva include a group of developing country representatives to the WTO, namely the ambassadors from Bangladesh, Chile, Egypt, Mexico, Senegal and Uruguay.
The overall purpose of this year’s Dialogue is to focus on the trade perspectives of the Obama administration, with particular attention to the implications for the development of the Doha Round.
As part of the program, ICTSD is partnering with various Washington-based institutions, including the German Marshall Fund (GMF), the Peterson Institute of International Economics (IIE), the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Resources for the Future RFF), Center for Global Development (CGD), USTR, Oxfam America, US Congress, World Bank and Oceana.
The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss a range of trade issues of particular relevance to the Doha Round, including agriculture and climate change.
