The West has been the geopolitical center of the world order established after WWII. Together, the United States and Europe established the rules and institutions that we call “global governance” today. However. they did not only create and govern the system – they were also the main beneficiaries. This Western dominated international order is currently in upheaval.

Above all, it is the political and economic rise of emerging countries – in particular China, India and Brazil - that is currently changing the geopolitical landscape. Their rise calls for reform of the Western shaped global governance system that still mirrors the geopolitical balance of power of the last century. A new multilateral architecture needs to be build. Signaling this much overdue shift was the enlargement of participation of the world financial summit on November 15 from a ‘G8 ‘to a ‘G20’ format. And also the come back on the international agenda of the idea to create an Global Economic Council reflects the need for change.

In this context the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung invites to discuss the Challenges of the Global Governance System in 21th Century.
