On 15 May 2013, the cabinet of South Africa ratified the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Annex to the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) Protocol on Trade (PT) which will soon be submitted to the parliament.

Article 16 of the protocol encourages members to harmonise SPS measures with international standards regarding plant health, animal health and food safety in particular. An annex for the protocol was later drafted to enforce provisions of article 16, which was adopted by SADC members in 2008. Most countries are also signatories to the WTO-SPS agreements, which will help iron out issues concerning the suitability of goods traded in the region.

The ratification was welcomed by Ms Phulma Williams, the cabinet’s spokesperson, who added that access to market for producers remained most crucial.
