The World Bank’s 2009 report on economic developments relevant to low and middle income countries finds the global economy transitioning from a period of sustained growth to widespread uncertainty. The report notes that world poverty has on balance increased, and that global GDP growth is likely to decline in 2009. A thorough analysis of overall trends and short term swings, this paper recommends policy steps which should be taken at the international level to respond to the global financial crisis and will be useful to a variety of stakeholders in the global economy.
