GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATORS AS TRADE-RELATED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. By Swarnim Waglé. United Nations Development Programme Discussion Paper, January 2007. This paper illustrates that the protection of geographical indicators can contribute to better human development and reduce poverty through local earnings, paying particular attention to applications in the Asian-Pacific region. The paper argues that geographical indicators, included in the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), are the most suitable form of intellectual property protection to prevent illegal appropriation and abuse of traditional knowledge. It also contains several interesting historical anecdotes about of the use of geographical indicators.
