WTO In Brief

OFFICIAL OPENING OF ADVISORY CENTRE FOR WTO LAW. On 5 October, an advisory centre on WTO law set up in July for developing countries officially opened its doors (see BRIDGES Weekly, 24 July 2001). The project is funded by eight European countries and Canada, with the Netherlands, Norway and Ireland each contributing $US 2.25 million. Located in Geneva, it is designed to facilitate developing country participation in the multilateral trade system. The Centre will provide developing countries with legal advice and training on WTO law, with an emphasis on dispute settlement. WTO Director-General Mike Moore said in a speech on 5 October that the opening of the Advisory Centre marked "the first time a true legal aid centre has been established within the international legal system, with a view to combating unequal possibilities of access to international justice as between states." He further stated that, "The Centre can go beyond the point which Secretariat assistance to developing countries had to stop, and provide full-fledged, high-quality, legal aid in all stages of the DSU procedure."
