About the Environment and Natural Resources Programme
Trade rules, poverty alleviation and environmental protection can, and should, be mutually supportive. ICTSD’s programme on trade, environment and natural resources engages stakeholders and provides new and innovative thinking on how to make trade policy effectively contribute to sustaining and improving livelihoods in developing countries that depend on natural resources.
Trade liberalisation needs to be balanced with supportive action for the conservation and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources both within the international trade system and in the context of global environmental governance regimes. The programme seeks to inform trade policy and trade negotiation processes such that ecosystems and ecosystem services that are essential for production and economic growth, export revenues, food security and human well-being are properly valued and exploited in a sustainable manner.
